What is the ideal front/rear weight split for touring?

A 40/60 front/rear split is generally considered ideal for loaded touring. This keeps the steering responsive while maintaining rear-wheel traction. With rear-only panniers, the split skews heavily rearward which can cause twitchy handling.

How much weight can I put in panniers?

Most quality rear racks are rated for 25-30 kg, and front racks for 10-15 kg. Total gear weight for multi-day touring is typically 10-20 kg. Lightweight bikepackers aim for under 8 kg total.

Should I use front panniers, rear panniers, or both?

For loads under 12 kg, rear-only is fine. Above 12 kg, four-pannier touring gives much better weight distribution and handling. Front-only is rarely ideal except for specific bikepacking setups on bikes with front racks designed for it.

How does load affect climbing?

Every kilogram added increases the effort on climbs proportionally. A 15 kg touring load on a 75 kg rider adds 20% more climbing effort. Low gearing (below 1:1 gear inches) is recommended for hilly touring routes.
