How do I measure chain stretch?

Use a chain checker tool. Place it on the chain: if the gauge falls into the links at the marked percentage, that is your current stretch. Most checkers show 0.5% and 0.75% marks.

Why is the limit lower for 11 and 12-speed?

11 and 12-speed chains are narrower and thinner. They have tighter tolerances with the cassette sprockets. Replacing at 0.5% stretch protects the more expensive cassette.

What happens if I ride past the stretch limit?

The worn chain accelerates cassette and chainring wear. When you finally fit a new chain, it may skip on the worn cassette, forcing a full drivetrain replacement.

Does terrain affect chain wear?

Yes, significantly. Off-road riding exposes the chain to dirt, grit and mud which act as abrasive paste. A chain used off-road may last half as long as one used on clean roads.

How often should I clean and lube my chain?

Every 200-300 miles in dry conditions, or after every wet ride. Wax-based lubes can extend chain life by up to 50% compared to oil-based lubes, but require a clean chain for application.
