What happens if the chain is too long?

A too-long chain may not tension properly, causing poor shifting, chain slap, and risk of the chain dropping off. The rear derailleur cannot take up the excess slack.

What happens if the chain is too short?

A too-short chain is dangerous. Shifting to big-big (largest chainring + largest sprocket) can rip off the rear derailleur. It also causes excessive drivetrain stress.

How many links come in a new chain?

Most new chains come with 114 or 116 links (228/232 half-links). You typically need to remove links to achieve the correct length for your bike.

What is the big-big method?

Route the chain through the big chainring and big sprocket, bypassing the derailleur. Pull tight and add 2 full links (4 half-links). This is the most reliable method for most bikes.

Does chainstay length matter?

Yes, significantly. Longer chainstays (touring, gravel bikes at 420-445 mm) need longer chains than short chainstays (road race bikes at 400-410 mm).

Chain Length Formula

Half-links = (2 x Chainstay / 12.7) + (Largest chainring + Largest sprocket) / 2 + 2
Round up to the nearest even number (chains use pairs of inner and outer links)
12.7 mm = standard half-link (pin-to-pin) length
1x drivetrains: add 2 extra half-links for chain wrap around large sprockets
Full links = Half-links / 2
