How do I measure chain wear?

Use a chain checker tool (£5-15). Place it on the chain: if the gauge falls fully into the links at the 0.5% mark, it is time to replace. At 0.75% wear, the cassette may also need replacing.

Why do 12-speed chains wear faster?

12-speed chains are narrower to fit more sprockets. Thinner side plates and pins mean less material and faster elongation under load. They need more frequent replacement.

What happens if I ride on a worn chain?

A worn chain rapidly wears the cassette and chainrings. Replacing just the chain costs £15-25, but a new cassette is £30-80 and chainrings £30-100+. Timely chain replacement saves money.

Does chain lube type matter?

Yes. Use dry lube in summer (cleaner, less grit attraction) and wet lube in winter (stays on in rain). Wax-based lubes can double chain life but require more preparation.

How often should I clean my chain?

For best life, clean and re-lube every 200-300 km in dry conditions, or after every wet ride. A quick wipe and re-lube takes 5 minutes and significantly extends chain life.
